I find the commands unit to be pretty fun to teach.
Students love being bossy! 😂
Here are 3 tips to make sure your students get it the first time.
Break down the different types of verbs over a few days.
I teach affirmative tú commands with regular verbs on Day 1, stem-changing verbs on Day 2, and irregular verbs on Day 3.
And by Day 4 students are basically pros!
Affirmative tú commands are honestly so stupidly easy ("put it in the él/ella form of the verb and say it with authority" is what I tell my students 😂) that you can easily incorporate new vocabulary.
Chores vocabulary maybe?
Giving directions in a city?
What a new student should do in school?
Whatever strikes your fancy and makes the most sense in your curriculum.
Include a variety of activities.
Partner speaking activity where your partner asks you what they should do today and you respond with the verb in the command form.
Whole-class speaking activity where students get up out of their seats and ask what they should do and the partner responds in the affirmative tú command form.
Translate English to Spanish.
Multiple choice - choose the correct command form of the verb.
Answer questions in the affirmative tú command form of the verb.
Read a paragraph and write the command form of what Ana has to do today.
And whatever else you can think of!
Give students scaffolded notes pages.
I teach basically all vocabulary and grammar and anything else with powerpoint.
I give students a scaffolded notes page so they can easily take notes and refer to them later.
By "scaffolded" I mean it matches the powerpoint exactly with blanks in it for the important parts that they have to write down.
So they can build those note-taking skills and also have something useful to refer to later in the period or when prepping for an exam!
You can grab my Spanish Affirmative Tú Commands Bundle in my TpT store and not have to worry about creating anything from scratch!
It includes 3 lessons, 1 homework, and 1 quiz with both paper and digital Google Slides versions. 📝💻
