7 Engaging Writing Activities for Any Topic in Spanish Class


You want to keep things fresh and new and engaging in your Spanish class, right?

Here are 7 ideas for engaging writing activities that you can use for any level of Spanish and just about any topic!

Answer Questions

Target specific vocab from that day's lesson with this activity.

How to set it up

Write questions with picture prompts from that day's targeted vocab.

Example directions

Answer the following questions, stating what you use for each activity. Follow the model.


Example topic

Example activity

Students write what hygiene vocabulary word they use to do various daily routine activities with reflexive verbs vocab that they already know.



Fill in the Blanks

This activity is ideal for verb forms or noun/adjective agreement. 

Example directions

Fill in the blanks with the appropriate form of gusta or gustan. Follow the model.

gustar with singular and plural nouns


Example activity

Students fill in the blanks with gusta or gustan based on the noun - singular or plural.



Write a Paragraph

Let students get creative with their vocab and/or grammar knowledge and actually apply what they know to their real lives. 

How to set it up

Give students a scenario and include a bulleted list of all info you want students to include.

Example directions

You have a new pen pal in Chile and he wants to know more about your family. Write a message to him in which you include the following information about three family members:

  • where you live
  • their names and relationships to you
  • what chores each one does (or has to do) at home

Example activity

Students write a paragraph using new chores vocab and include old family vocab to state what chores they and their family members do.



Describe a Picture

Students use new vocab to describe what they see in pictures. They can get creative!

Describe what hurts, is broken, or is burned in each picture below. Be creative! Follow the model.

Students write what is hurt, broken, or burned based on pictures.



Correct Errors

Students have to correct errors in sentences. This is great with irregular verb forms, or common mistakes. Make it tricky by including some sentences with no errors, or multiple errors in the same sentence.

Your friend isn't as good at Spanish as you. Read each of the following sentences and fix the incorrect future tense verbs. Follow the model.

Students have to correct the forms of regular and irregular future tense verb forms.



Translate to Spanish

Students translate sentences to Spanish. This is great when meaning is structured completely differently in Spanish (hace que, subjunctive, etc) or when students just need extra practice with specific vocab or grammar.

Translate the following sentences to Spanish. Start your sentences with the "hace + time + que" phrase. Follow the model.

Categorize

Have students conjugate verbs based on how they conjugate, or categorize vocab based on any categories that make sense. 

Example directions

You had all your verb categorized by -y- verbs, stem-changing, and regular er/ir, but they all spilled on the floor and now they're disorganized! Categorize each of the verbs below in their appropriate category.
