Sometimes the rewards students get the MOST excited about are the ones that cost basically nothing. 😂
Not every reward needs to be candy or a prize box or a whole classroom economy system that you then have to manage for the rest of your life.
Zero out of ten, do not recommend.
If you're looking for simple ways to recognize students without spending a ton of money, here are 3 low-cost rewards my students genuinely loved.
1. Let a student explain something to the class
If a student got the right answer or clearly understood a concept, sometimes I'd ask if they wanted to explain it to the class or show their work. This is VERY personality-dependent. 😂
For some students, this would feel like punishment. Absolutely not.
But for your extroverts? Your students who love attention and love feeling smart in front of their classmates? They will THRIVE.
Some students genuinely see this as a huge honor.
Not only does it recognize their effort, but it also gives them a chance to demonstrate their understanding and help their classmates.
Just be selective about who you offer this reward to. What feels rewarding to one student can feel terrifying to another.
2. Put stickers on quizzes
I bought Spanish stickers that said things like:✨ bien hecho
✨ fantástico
✨ excelente
And I put them on quizzes that earned a 90 or above.
Were the stickers technically free? No. Were students irrationally excited about them anyway? YES. 😂
Like truly thrilled. Middle schoolers. High schoolers. Didn't matter. Worth every penny.
There's something about getting a physical marker of success that students love. A sticker takes two seconds to add, but students treated them like they had won an award.
If you're looking for a low-effort way to celebrate student achievement, stickers are an easy win.
3. Use students' names in classwork
If you create your own activities or edit existing ones, casually work students' names into examples and questions. They lose their MINDS over this. 😂A random sentence suddenly becomes the most exciting thing they've ever read because now they're in it. And for some reason, students feel deeply honored by seeing their name in a worksheet.
I recommend doing this with 1-2 students max and only a few times a month. That way it stays special.
If every activity includes everyone's name, the novelty wears off quickly. But when it happens occasionally, students absolutely love it.
Student rewards don't have to be expensive
Sometimes the best classroom incentives aren't the ones that cost the most money. They're the ones that make students feel recognized.Whether it's letting a student explain a concept, adding a sticker to a quiz, or sneaking their name into an activity, these small moments can make a surprisingly big impact.
Teaching is weird. 😂 But I'll take easy wins wherever I can get them.
